If you love bestselling authors and you love book bargains then you'll really love our new sale table of gently-used hardcover book club editions at $4.95 each or 6 for $20. We just received around 1,000 of these and are marking them to move quickly. We still have a sale table of new books marked down by 51 percent to celebrate our 51 years in the book business and we always have lots of new releases and popular regional titles and BOGO promotions in the store.
Although locally-owned retailers often bemoan the economic fact that area residents spend a lot of their discretionary income at vacation spots, there are two sides to that coin. During the summer season, a large part of our book sales are to customers who are visiting our area and folks who have recently relocated to the region. One thing I've noticed about folks who have relocated here from another state is that they don't tend to travel out of town as much as locals do. Those newbies often describe our bookstore as 'the best bookstore they've ever seen' or their 'new favorite store.'
Earl Carter's “Appalachian Album” is the fastest selling book we've ever had and has been our bestselling title for the past year. There are only a few copies left and they are all signed; now is the time to pick one up. This title will be a classic in Appalachian studies and literature for decades.
Vince Staten has produced an audio book of “An UnCONVENTIONAL History of Kingsport” - the book and audio book are both limited editions and collectibles. We purchased all the remaining copies of Vince's book and all the other books that were published by the Times News newspaper. Vince's books and audio books are signed.
Colonial Heights native and current Atlanta resident Kimberly Belle, locally known as Kim Maleski, was in town recently as a speaker at the Kingsport Literacy Council and Friends of Allandale event. We have copies of all four of her books and a few signed copies while our supply lasts.
Robert Gipe, of Kingsport fame, has released a second book in his Appalachian novel series, “Weedeater; An Illustrated Novel.” Robert lives in Harlan, Kentucky, and teaches Appalachian Studies at Southeast Kentucky Community College.
We have several products from and about the Carter Family that you may not have seen. Also, Rory Feek's new book tells us more about his life and his family after Joey died. We have books, videos and CDs.
Well-known Scott County native Jill Sauceman has a new book coming out this fall, describing her lifelong battle with lupus and chronicling her kidney transplant at Vanderbilt Hospital. The forward for Jill's book is written by Adriana Trigiani who, incidentally, also has a new release coming in late fall. We plan to have both of these ladies for a signing event in the fall - so stay tuned for more information about that.
Keith Donnelly will be here signing books on August 5th, and Lin and J. L. Stepp will be here on September 8th for a signing. Watch this space for more signing scheduled for the rest of the year.
