Besides our consumable natural food products (honey, herbs, spices, apple cider vinegar and other natural health products), we also carry a selection of books with recipes and techniques for getting the best use from these products. And, of course, we have customer reward cards that save you money on repeat purchases of the products. As we look at a few of these products, please remember that we don't prescribe remedies, make any medical claims or recommend particular products for specific uses. We're just sharing some of the wide-spread traditional home uses of the products for many years. Always consult a licensed physician before you use any products for medical purposes.
Organic apple cider vinegar has been used for many years to aid digestion, assist in weight loss, treat arthritis and help balance blood sugar levels. Bragg is a well-known brand in this category, selling apple cider vinegar products they describe as containing “the mother” which is “strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria that give the product a murky, cobweb-like appearance.” Bragg also produces other organic food products including what I call “drinkables” - a premixed bottle of organic apple cider vinegar with water, honey and selections with fruit juices and spices like ginger or cinnamon.
Local honey has a tradition of use for both external and internal purposes for health-related issues: for example, it has been used for a topical first aid for burns and wounds. Honey is called the only food that doesn't spoil due to its low water content and the acidic pH. A number of studies indicate that mixing honey and apple cider vinegar with warm water makes a tonic that has shown to combine the positive benefits of both products. We carry Ellis Farms sourwood, blackberry, and wildflower honey varieties in several different sizes and have free samples on request. The “flavor” of the honey doesn't mean the product is “added” to the honey, but refers to the plants bees are exposed to and where they normally collect nectar and pollen from the plants closest to the hives. Yes, our honey is “raw honey,” meaning it hasn't been filtered, heated (pasteurized), otherwise processed, or adulterated with high fructose corn syrup. It is the pure product from the honey bees and the hive.
High quality teas and herbal infusions: We stock nearly 300 different kinds, of which about two-thirds of them are certified organic (meaning the plants have not been exposed to herbicides or pesticides). There is a plant called the “tea plant” (camilla sinensis). Everything else that we call “tea” is actually an “herbal infusion,” meaning that it comes from another plant (herb) that is not “the” tea plant – so, we often call them “herbal” teas.
Essential oils and organic herbs and spices: I'll talk more about these another time, but just keep in mind that we stock about 300 different products in the line. Our main supplier is Aura Cacia, one of the largest, oldest and most respected companies in the business. Most of our organic herbs and spices come from their sister companies, Simply Organic and Frontier Co-op – again, two of the largest, oldest and most respected companies in the business.
