Drs. Sam and Cindy Pulitzer believe everyone deserves a beautiful smile. The Pulitzers have been providing orthodontic care for kids, teens and adults in Kingsport since 2008. Recently, Pulitzer Orthodontics was selected as Kingsport’s No. 1 Orthodontist in the Kingsport Times-News Readers’ Choice Awards. So, what sets Pulitzer Orthodontics apart from the field?

Dr. Cindy Pulitzer says, “Our patients are not only in our care, but are in the care of our wonderful staff. Each staff member has a particular gift with patients, from taking care of a fearful patient to tackling a technically-demanding appointment with finesse. Our caring staff is a big part of what makes our patients’ experience a positive one.”

Pulitzer Orthodontics has an inviting, relaxing family atmosphere. There you will be greeted by friendly and welcoming staff. You might even be greeted by “Stitch,” the Pulitzer’s chocolate Labrador. Stitch, a rescue dog, has been trained by Cindy as a therapy dog to be used with patients who need a little extra comfort during orthodontic appointments. He is friendly to everyone and quite an asset to the practice.

Both orthodontists pride themselves on developing one-on-one relationships with patients and their families. Dr. Sam Pulitzer says, “We maintain continuity of care with our patients. Cindy and I do not share patients because we work a staggered schedule which allows us to build individual relationships with patients over the entire course of their care.” Dr. Sam and Dr. Cindy feel ongoing communication with patients and parents is key to the success of their orthodontic care.

The Pulitzers use the DAMON braces system. DAMON braces are typically less painful than other braces and enable the teeth the slide into position more easily. Pulitzer Orthodontics’ state-of-the-art facility incorporates all MAC computer technology. Their digital Panorex x-ray imaging system and intraoral scanner cuts down on the number of teeth molds which have to be made, also eliminating more traditional orthodontic care start-time waiting. Their onsite lab allows them to manufacture the majority of their own retainers after braces are removed. The treatment area includes large windows for patients to admire the outdoors. Wait time passes quickly for kids in the video game center and Lego play area.

Their story: Twelve years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Louisiana, severely damaging the home of orthodontists, Sam and Cindy Pulitzer. At the time, Cindy was expecting the couple’s first son. Dr. Sam Pulitzer was already a practicing orthodontist while his wife Cindy was still in residency at the LSU Health Science Center School of Dentistry in New Orleans. The husband and wife team went to work temporarily in Monroe, Louisiana, with Cindy’s father, who is also an orthodontist. While seeking a permanent orthodontic practice, the Pulitzers considered Tennessee a top choice. Cindy Pulitzer had received her undergraduate degree at University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, located northwest of Chattanooga. While there, she developed a great admiration of the beauty and people of the state. In 2008, the Pulitzers happily took over the practice of retiring orthodontist Dr. Donald R. Halliburton in Kingsport, Tennessee. In 2011, they dreamed of building a new state-of-the-art office facility. In 2013, that dream became a reality. Originally located downtown, Pulitzer Orthodontics moved into its newly-completed and present office located at 1200 Pulitzer Place, Kingsport.

Drs. Sam and Cindy Pulitzer love living in the Tri-Cities area and are very active in the community. They have three sons: Bryce, Avery and Vaughn. The family enjoys outdoor activities like running, hiking and soccer. Each year they participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with their staff and children. Sam is passionate about soccer and president of F.C. Dallas Tri-Soccer Club for youth soccer players in the Tri-Cities. In 2017, they held their first “Patient Appreciation Color Me Rad Party” for past and present orthodontic patients.

Besides their main office in Kingsport, Pulitzer Orthodontics also has additional locations in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, located at 1 Cloverleaf Square, Suite E-2, and in Rogersville at 307 S. Depot Street, Suite B-1. These locations are open on designated Wednesdays by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closing at noon for lunch).
