Grand Classic field boasts 11 Southwest Virginia teams

Tournament time continues this week for area high school basketball teams.

Several teams participated in tournaments last week, but many more are in action this week, including the largest tournament in Southwest Virginia.

OFF TO THE ARBY’S

Two Southwest Virginia teams, Gate City and Union, are participating in the prestigious Arby’s Classic at Viking Hall in Bristol, Tenn.

Union plays in the first-game of the 20-team tournament, taking on Tabernacle of the Bahamas in a play-in game to the field of 16 on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Gate City begins Arby’s Classic play on Thursday. The Blue Devils meet Wenonah of Alabama in a first-round game at 7 p.m.

LOCAL TEAMS AT THE PRIOR

The Grand Home Furnishings Holiday Classic at the Prior Center tips off at Virginia-Wise’s convocation center on Wednesday with 12 teams — 11 from Southwest Virginia — participating in the four-day event.

The Grand Classic is the largest high school basketball tournament in far Southwest Virginia.

Northwood and Rye Cove battle each other in the opening game of the tournament at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Other first-round games on Wednesday have Virginia High playing Chilhowie at 5:30 p.m., Ridgeview meeting Eastside at 7 p.m. and Lebanon taking on Wise Central at 8:30 p.m.

The tournament’s quarterfinal round is scheduled for Thursday. At 4 p.m., Richlands awaits the winner between Northwood and Rye Cove; the Ridgeview-Eastside winner faces Berea, Ky. at 5:30 p.m.; J.I. Burton goes up against the Virginia High-Chilhowie winner at 7 p.m.; and the Lebanon-Central winner meets Honaker at 8:30 p.m.

Consolation-round games as well as the tournament semifinals are scheduled for Friday.

Saturday’s play features more consolation games plus the championship contest at 5 p.m.

Bonus basketball will be on tap at the Prior Center on Saturday when the Virginia-Wise women take on King at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS IN A SHOWCASE

Several of the area’s top high school girls basketball teams will be featured on Friday in the one-day Emory & Henry Showcase in Emory, Va.

The day begins at 11 a.m. when Marion takes on State Line Rush of Galax. Rural Retreat and Graham follow at 12:30 p.m., then Patrick Henry plays Gate City at 2 p.m.

Showcase action continues at 4 p.m. with Honaker facing Ridgeview, followed by Union vs. Sullivan East at 5:30 p.m. and Parry McCluer vs. Wise Central at 7 p.m.
