WISE — Wise Central and Union set the tone early in their opening-day games of the Powell Valley National Bank Tip-Off girls’ basketball tournament at Virginia-Wise’s Prior Center.

Central, the defending Class 2 state champions, relied on a strong defensive effort and took advantage of 34 turnovers to roll to a 58-32 victory over the East Ridge, Ky., Lady Warriors (1-3).

Central coach Robin Dotson said his team still has some work to do.

“We played really well in spurts, but we’ve got to be more consistent against good teams,” said Dotson.

Dee Cvetnich led the balanced attack for Central (2-0) with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Hannah Carter had 14 points.

Kelsi Stone led East Ridge with 11 points.

Union jumped ahead to a 21-5 lead and never looked back on the way to a big victory over Rural Retreat.

The Lady Bears (2-0) increased their lead to 38-13 by halftime and cruised to the win.

Union took advantage of 23 Rural Retreat turnovers in the victory.

“I think any time you can create some turnovers out of your pressure and create some transition and easy buckets in transition, I think that’s always a bonus,” said Union coach Kory Bostic. “I thought our energy and press early was pretty good. Getting 15 turnovers in the first half was really key to sparking that run.”

Emili Brooks scored 21 points to lead Union’s scoring. Jayda Smith added 13 and Heather Lipps finished with 12 points. Jaylan Webb pulled down nine rebounds.

Lebanon (2-1) broke open a close game by outscoring Shelby Valley 16-4 in the third quarter.

The Lady Pioneers then had to hold off a furious rally by Shelby Valley (1-2) in the fourth quarter to hold on for the narrow victory.

Kara Long scored a game-high 17 points, while Averie Price added 12.

Alyssa Elswick scored 15 points to lead Shelby Valley, while Tori Hampton finished with 12 for the Lady Wildcats.

Honaker (2-0) used a 9-0 scoring run over the final 2:00 of the contest to take an opening-day win over State Line Rush (4-4), a Galax-based home school team.

The Lady Tigers led 38-32 after three quarters, but State Line battled back in the final quarter to tie the game at 43 before Honaker started its final run to pull away for the win.

LeeAnna McNulty led Honaker with 14 points, while Kyla Boyd had 12 and Halie Hilton finished with 10.

Morgan Duty finished with nine rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

Kacie Shafner had 15 points and eight rebounds for State Line, while Audrey Clark had 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

The round-robin tournament continues Friday at Virginia-Wise with State Line playing Rural Retreat at 4 p.m., followed by Union vs. East Ridge, Honaker vs. Lebanon and Wise Central battling Shelby Valley.
