David Crockett joined its Washington County neighbor in announcing a new girls basketball coach Friday with Tony Gordon taking over the Lady Pioneers’ program.

“I am honored and excited to be named the head coach at David Crockett,” said Gordon. “While it is expected to be an adjustment, I am ready to take on the challenge of the change from coaching boys to coaching girls.”

Also on Friday, Daniel Boone selected Beau Hauldren to take over its girls basketball program.

Gordon had a successful run as head coach of the boys’ program at University High for eight seasons. He led the Buccaneers to two region titles, three sectional appearances, and also to the Class A state semifinals in 2003.

Gordon later went on to head coaching stints at Morristown West and Elizabethton. He moved over to David Crockett as an assistant under John Good, helping the Pioneers reach the Class AAA state tournament for the first time in school history in 2016.

Gordon’s overall varsity coaching record is 212-156. He replaces Marty Story, who resigned last month to go back to college.

Gordon said some of his proudest moments were watching his daughter, Kasey, play at the collegiate level at Milligan.
