Athletic director Kendall Rainey confirmed recently that the school did not renew the contract for Elise Clyburn, who became the Cavaliers’ interim coach in June after Kristin Kunzman resigned to join the women’s basketball coaching staff at Millersville University.
Kunzman left after coaching the Cavaliers to a 21-win season. Clyburn served as an assistant to Kunzman during that season.
But the Cavaliers — featuring one senior, Allison Ball, and several experienced players on the 2017-18 roster — struggled to a six-win season. Virginia-Wise finished 6-21 overall and 5-17 in Mountain East Conference games.
Rainey declined to comment on specifics of Clyburn’s contract not being renewed.
“It was an interim situation. It was for one year,” noted Rainey, who said she and Clyburn had an “amicable discussion” about the coach’s contract not being renewed.
“It’s time now to find a coach who we hope will add some continuity to the program,” Rainey said.
Clyburn can apply for the position, Rainey said.
Virginia-Wise is conducting a national search to fill the position and the NCAA Division II school already has received over 50 applications for the job, Rainey said.
She said the timetable for hiring the new coach is fluid at this point.
“We want to hire someone as soon as we can, but we want to make sure that whoever we hire is the right person for the program,” Rainey said.
