GATE CITY — Gate City’s baseball team picked up a stylish win on Senior Night and ended a three-game losing streak in the process.

Lucas Larkins was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Drew Meyers was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the Blue Devils’ 14-5 Mountain 7 District win over Ridgeview on Tuesday night.

Gate City (7-12, 4-8) totaled 12 hits and drew nine bases on balls.

Noah Mullins finished 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Wolfpack (5-14, 2-10).

IN THE EARLY GOING

Tyler Hamm led off the Gate City half of the second inning with a double down the right-field line to get the Blue Devils’ offense going.

Two batters late, Jake Taylor grounded into a fielder’s choice and Hamm scored from first on the play for a 1-0 lead after two full frames.

Ridgeview tied the game on Mullins’ base hit to center field that scored Griffen Counts from second, but a strong throw by Larkins on the same play kept the ’Pack from doing further damage. Larkins, in center, threw a dart to catcher Jon Compton, who tagged out the trailing baserunner and kept the game tied at 1.

DELAY OF GAME

Gate City was leading 4-2 in the top of the fourth when lightning lit up the sky and the umpires stopped the game.

The rain never came, though, and the storm passed harmlessly by the ballfield.

When the game resumed, Ridgeview had the bases loaded with two outs and seemingly poised to take the lead, but the Blue Devils escaped.

SPARK IN THE OFFENSE

After the delay, the Blue Devils scored 10 more runs over the next three innings, with multiple players taking part.

Dalson Creger, Meyers and Larkins each drove in a pair of runs during the onslaught.

ON THE MOUND

Hamm, who came on in relief of Meyers, struck out five and was credited with the win. Three Gate City pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.
