KINGSPORT — It’s time to get wet.

The outdoor water park at the Kingsport Aquatic Center will open for the season on Monday (May 14) at 10:30 a.m.

Swimmers will be able to enjoy the two looping waterslides, the 900-foot-long lazy river, the climbing structure and play area with water cannons, lily pad crossing and concession stand.

And new to the water park this year are outdoor cabanas, which will be available for rent.

“With all of the warm weather we’ve been having, we know everyone is excited to get in the pool,” said Kari Matheney, executive director of the KAC.

PRICE OF ADMISSION

Admission to the KAC is based on industry standards. Upon arrival at the facility, children will be required to take off their shoes and be measured.

If the child is 48 inches or taller, admission is $10. If the child is under 48 inches, admission is $8. Seniors pay $8 and children 2 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 10:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday and Saturday: 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Sunday: 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

WATER SAFETY DAY

The KAC will also be participating in International Water Safety Day on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Prizes, including free swim lessons and water park passes, will be given out throughout the event.

“It’s so important to be familiar with basic water-safety skills, especially during summer months when people are more often in the water,” Matheney said. “Learning to swim and exposure to water safety skills and messages that swimming lessons offer provide a lifelong foundation for drowning prevention.”

The International Water Safety Day schedule is as follows:

— 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.: Longfellow’s W.H.A.L.E. Tales movie on water safety (Legion Room)

— 5 p.m. to 5:20 p.m.: Backboarding demo, a lifeguard demonstration on spinal/head injuries (Outdoor Leisure Pool)

— 5:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.: Free mini swim lesson and placement tests (Outdoor Leisure Pool)

— 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.: Longfellow’s W.H.A.L.E. Tales movie on water safety (Legion Room)
