New Avengers movie could soon own all the box office records

“Avengers: Infinity War” – the mother of all superhero movies – will be released to U.S. theaters this Friday. This 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe features an ensemble cast of more than 30 superheroes and dozens of other well-known characters from previous Marvel blockbusters.

You’re going to see a rather scruffy-looking Captain America and the Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and Black Panther to take on the nihilistic Thanos and his mysterious Black Order. These inter-galactic villains will scour the Earth in search of the remaining Infinity Stones for a gauntlet that will allow Thanos to bend reality to his will.

“Avengers: Infinity War” will be the payoff of 10 years of character development and world-building on behalf of Marvel Studios. Millions of fans around the world are expected to fill the theaters this weekend to witness the climactic showdown with Thanos, who has been the behind-the-scenes “big bad” since 2012’s “The Avengers.”

According to the Box Office Mojo website, Marvel has had 18 straight number one openings with its movies, producing nearly $15 billion in total global box office figures. However, there are two milestones the Marvel movies have yet to usurp – opening weekend and worldwide ticket sales.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) holds the record for highest opening weekend at just under $248 million. The worldwide box office juggernaut is still “Avatar,” which raked in nearly $2.79 billion during its 34-week run back in 2009.

Face front, true believers. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes just might be the summer movie blockbuster that unseats “Star Wars” and “Avatar” from atop the box office record books.
