During a special called meeting last week the Mount Carmel Board of Mayor and Aldermen gave its final approval to an ordinance that does away with the 2009 B-2 "retail only" zoning on most of Main Street.

A man with a winning $259 million Powerball ticket claimed what officials are calling the largest jackpot ever won in Tennessee. Roy Cockrum of Knoxville plans to accept a lump sum payment of $115 million.

Superintendent Lyle Ailshie told the board that the "July final" BEP, or Basic Education Program, numbers from Tennessee came in Wednesday afternoon and were about $107,000 higher than the June estimate, which in turn was $68,000 over the May estimate.
