House panel considers Internet sales tax compromise

Seeking to end the battle over the collection of sales taxes for online purchases, the House Judiciary Committee debated possible compromises that included two ideas to tax Internet sales based on the retailer's home state, rather than the buyer's.

A Kingsport woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to a scheme in which she and her ex-boyfriend stole the identities of Sullivan County Jail inmates, filed false tax returns and kept the money for their own personal use.

A gas leak triggered an earthshaking explosion that flattened two apartment buildings Wednesday, killing at least three people, injuring more than 60 and leaving nine missing. A tenant said residents had complained repeatedly about "unbearable" gas smell.
